2022 WWDC Pickies

jbiatek 7th June 2022 at 3:35pm
Winner: Jason

Points are doubled for everything since WWDC is in the first half of the year.

🥇 Round 1 (3 points)

HostPickScore
Jason "Revamped multitasking for iPad" 6
James "Apple announces VR-specific APIs" 0
John "The iPad gets extended external display support" 6
  • John finally has to make a new first round pick this time, and goes with this one. James thinks this might be the year.

🥈 Round 2 (2 points)

HostPickScore
Jason "M2 MacBook Air" 4
  • When questioned about whether this meant a preview, or shipping, or whether he wanted to add any verb to this pick, Jason just repeated "M2 MacBook Air!" over and over until the others moved on.
James "Apple Silicon Mac Pro introduction" 0
  • Doesn't need to have a ship date, we just need to hear more about it.
John "Third party widgets gain interactivity" 0

⚡️ Lightning Round (1 point)

HostPickScore
Jason "Apple presents a way for developers to build and test VR/AR apps" 0
James "A 3D user interface framework based on SwiftUI is introduced" 0
John "Personal automations in Shortcuts for Mac" 0
Jason "Some form of systemwide keyboard shortcuts for iPadOS" 0
James "One or more Relay FM hosts are seen on the livestream" 0
  • There is some debate about the rules because a few Relay FM hosts will be in attendance, including both John and Jason. By the letter of the Charter, hosts aren't allowed to try to induce their own picks to come true, but there is no restriction on other hosts trying to make another pick be false. Thus, John and Jason will want to avoid the cameras to deny James the points and that is allowed, but James is friends with other Relay FM hosts and could try to illegally induce the pick remotely. Eventually, some ground rules are established:
    • James may not ask any Relay host to do anything unusual to appear on camera.
    • John and Jason are allowed to try to stay off the live stream, but may not break any Apple Park rules to do so. They are also not allowed to interfere with the visibility of other Relay FM hosts.
    • Dad Stephen Hackett may be called in by any host to adjudicate whether anyone is, quote, "up to some shenanigans".
John "The iOS or iPadOS share sheet gets a functional or design makeover" 2
Jason "Third-party watch face API" 0
  • James has elaborate plans for a calculator watch face if this comes true.
James "There is an Apple TV+ show skit" 0
  • Ungraded ideas: Craig Federighi wakes up in the Severance office, Ted Lasso gives Tim Cook some inspiring pointers, Gary Oldman is mean to an Apple employee, Jason Momoa operates an iPhone with VoiceOver
John "Desktop widgets for the Mac" 0

Unusually, the Lightning Round ended after just 3 picks each because James had "a thing". With 5 picks total for each host, the results are likely to all be integers for once, unless some fractional points are awarded.
